Africa Regional International Staff Student Exchange:  Food Security and Sustainable Human Wellbeing (ARISE)
 
The University of Cape Town (UCT - South Africa) not only explores bilateral relationships with institutions on the continent, but also seek triangular partnerships with strategic partners in the global North and on the continent. In 2012, the University of Cape Town was awarded funding by the European Union under the Mwalimu Nyerere / Intra-ACP academic mobility scheme to partner with other institutions on the continent in a collaborative programme called the Africa Regional International Staff/Student Exchange: Food Security and Sustainable Human Wellbeing (ARISE). The objectives of ARISE are (i) to increase the number of qualified postgraduates in the selected fields of Agriculture, Medical Sciences, Engineering and Energy, (ii) to combat brain drain and (iii) to create mechanisms for knowledge and skills circulation on the continent, amongst others.
 
ARISE will provide a total of 100 opportunities for masters and doctoral studies as well as for shorter research and administrative visits for student and staff mobility between the partner institutions.  The ARISE partner institutions are the University of Cape Town, (South Africa - Co-ordinating institution), Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia),  Makerere University (Uganda), University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Rwanda (Rwanda – previous NUR) and the University of Ghana – Legon (Ghana). ARISE’s technical partner is the University of Leuven and the International Education Association of South Africa serves as associate partner.
 
The call for applications is currently open and closes on 28 February 2014.

The Scholarship covers:

  1. Roundtrip flight ticket and visa costs (using a preferred travel agent and calculated against direct linear distance)
  2. Direct participation costs such as tuition fees, registration fees and service fees where applicable
  3. Comprehensive Travel Insurance (Health, Accident and Travel)
  4. A monthly subsistence allowance for the mobility period:
