New Proposed Constitution Approved by National Assembly 1 April 2010
On Thursday 1 April the Kenyan National Assembly approved a new draft constitution. This brings Kenyans to the last stage of a process that first started in the early 90s! But the last few months of the process are not likely to be easy. Although the political elite seems to have resolved its differences on whether Kenya should have a presidential or parliamentary system (choosing a presidential system) and the nature of devolution, the church has vowed to oppose the draft for a clause concerning the right to life that it argues is too liberal on abortion and for its continued recognition of Kadhis' courts.
