
The African Network of Constitutional Lawyers (ANCL), in partnership with the Jurisprudence and International Department, Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, is pleased to welcome scholars, practitioners, judicial officers, policymakers, students, and civil society actors to the ANCL Conference 2026. Held under the theme “Reimagining Constitutionalism in Africa: Balancing State Capacity and Non-State Governance,” the conference provides a timely platform to interrogate some of the most pressing constitutional questions facing the continent today.

BACKGROUND
The African Network of Constitutional Lawyers (ANCL), in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at the University of the Free State, is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for the 2026 Winter School on Contemporary Constitutionalism in Africa.
This year’s Winter School will be held from 17–20 August 2026 under the theme:
“Globality, Extraction and Sustainable Constitutionalism: African Resource Governance in a Multipolar World.”

From 21-22 October 2024, the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, in collaboration with the NRF Chair in International Constitutionalism, the Faculty of Law at the University of the Free State, and the African Network for Constitutional Lawyers, hosted the highly anticipated Comparative Constitutionalism in Africa Conference. This event honoured the distinguished scholarship of Prof. Charles Manga Fombad, a globally respected expert in comparative constitutional law.
Held in a hybrid format at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa campus, the conference attracted over 100 in-person participants and numerous online attendees, including academics, human rights advocates, policy experts, and students.
Over two days, lively discussions unfolded on Prof. Fombad’s influential work and the broader developments within African constitutionalism.

The Tenth STIAS Annual Seminar on Constitutionalism in Africa (SASCA 2023) will take place in Stellenbosch (South Africa) from Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 September 2023.
