To unpack these crises, the African Network of Constitutional Lawyers (ANCL) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) launched a project seeking to effectively communicate the case for respect for constitutionalism to stability, accountability and effective governance, and the importance of investing in relatively democratic countries to ensure the resilience of these systems.
True democracy requires the continuous ability to peacefully replace underperforming leaders. Constitutionalism dictates that everyone, including the Head of State, must follow the rules. Firm term limits are non-negotiable because they block unchecked power, invite fresh youth leadership, and reduce the political frustrations that spark conflict.

When the winner claims total control over state resources and institutions, the losing side faces complete exclusion. We must build inclusive governance models where power is shared, and oversight bodies remain fiercely independent.
Borrowing is fine when it builds infrastructure, but opaque, unchecked debt triggers severe inflation, and punishing taxation for Africans. This directly crushes young people by stripping funding from education, jobs, and entrepreneurship.
As part of the project, the ANCL created a Youth Digest and Policy Paper discussing Constitutionalism, Winner-takes-all Politics, Public Debt, and the importance of good governance in improving the lives of Africans:
